National Novel Writing Month (and other things)

Sun Nov 1, 2009, 6:56 PM
November is National Novel Writing Month! What does that mean? That means that every year in Novemember a bunch of crazy writers all decide to try and write, from scratch, a 50,000 word novel in the month of November. You're allowed to use outlines and character sheets made previously, but all writing has to occur in November. Do you love to write? Are you up for the challange? Then you should sign up, and check out NaNoWriMo's site: [link] I also recommend that you stop by the Critique-It group's November news. ( [link] ) because it has some resource links for NaNoWriMo.

In other news, Concept Art ( [link] ) is having a SALE on their DVDs. For those of you who don't know, Concept Art is a non-profit website and artistic community dedicated to furthering the work of artists, particularily in relation to the concept art field. All DVDs usually priced at $15-$20 are on sale for $10, until MONDAY. Quick, there's not much longer left!

I'm participating in National Novel Writing Month for the first time this year, so my updates on my Concept Art sketch book might be sketchy (har har) this month, and irregular -- Not that that's anything new. I'm continuing to work with my tablet, and am trying to figure out more about how Gimp works, and use that as well as my free version of Art Rage. As always, people are welcome to request Constructive Criticism from me, but Critique-It, a group I'm part of, also has their que for November opened, so you can ask them for a Critique: [link]

That's all for now, keep those creative juices flowing!

So, who is this Tavenlee person, and why are they here? Why aren't there any Deviations up yet?

Well, I've been the occasional browser of DeviantArt for awhile now, and it's always frustrated me that I couldn't add comments to things, so I finally caved and got one. I doubt I'll be putting many of my works up here, as I prefer to use ConceptArt, and feel that their community is more supportive and helpful to improvement.

That's right, I'm a DEVIANT from DeviantArt; I like reciving and giving advice and constructive criticism. If I can't find something in an artwork that could be improved, I feel like I'm skimping out. I always try to say the good and the bad, but I many cases you already know what's good. Everyone loves praise, but if you don't get suggestions on how to improve, then you won't.

I'm mainly here to comment and browse, and maybe after I've read and double-checked all the legal jargon, put a few of my works up.

Feel free to drop a comment, or stop by my ConceptArt sketchbook.

I only just recently learned how to make text into links, so I finally did yesterday.

Horray for me.

I must mention that your guide has become quite useful to me! I have been using it everytime I comment on a deviation and it has helped me to write constructive comments that actually help people with their art! gasp!
Thanks for posting such an awesome thing!

I'm glad to hear that people are finding it useful! Remember, you're also welcome to link to it if you want to have guidelines for people to give you good constructive criticism, or inspire people to give other's work goood, in-depth comments. :)

I'm also considering making another critique guide for Critique-It's contest (which closes December 1), that goes more indepth into things. Would you find that of interest? I don't want to make something too wordy and dry, but I'm thinking it might be helpful for those people who do wish to further their constructive criticism abilities beyond the basics here.

Raindrops on roses and girls in white dresses
It's sleeping with the roaches and taking best guesses
So shed off the sheets and before all the stains
And a few more of your least favorite things.

HAHAH. So I go to look at that site, and this is the first thing I get: "The story must have a fish involved in the middle. The story must involve a broom in the beginning. A character will prepare for a birthday. A character is deceptive throughout most of the story. During the story, a character eats something that disagrees with them."

ALL I could think about was Lord of the Rings. I am SUCH a geek. LOL.

And so the cold came –
Without warning, without sound.
With tendrils of ice that thickened,
As the tides of Summer unwound.
